BROCTON - The No. 6 Pine Valley Lady Panthers (5-8) used a 10-run fifth inning to upset the No. 3 Brocton Lady Bulldogs (10-5), 18-1, Thursday in a Class D softball quarterfinal game. The game was called after the fifth inning due to inclement weather.
"The weather got real nasty," Brocton coach Jeff Franze said. "We tried to get it in.
"It's a rough way to end your season, but when you get beat that bad, there's no second-guessing. (Pine Valley was) the much better team today."
Pine Valley was ahead 8-1 before the fifth-inning offensive barrage. Alex Bentham led the attack with four hits, four RBIs, a home run and a triple while Nichole Rinehart added four hits, four RBIs and a home run of her own. Kayla Mansfield tallied three hits, two doubles and three RBIs to support the Lady Panthers.
Jessica Wilcox earned the win in the circle for Pine Valley as she struck out 10, walked one and allowed two hits in what turned out to be a complete-game effort.
Brocton had no extra-base hits in the loss.
Jessica Putcher was tagged as the losing pitcher with five strikeouts, two walks and 11 hits surrendered.
