Local youth athletes will compete at the Hershey's Track & Field Games on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Strider Field.
They will be competing for the ultimate prize - a trip to the Hershey's Track & Field Games North American Final Meet in Hershey, Pa. The Hershey's Track & Field Games is the longest-running youth fitness program of its kind in North America and is designed to encourage physical fitness among youth and emphasizes sportsmanship through basic track and field events such as running, jumping and throwing.
This will be the seventh annual Hershey's Track and Field Games hosted by the Chautauqua Striders at Strider Field. The event is free and open to boys and girls ages nine through 14 (as of Dec. 31, 2013) born 1999-2004.
The Hershey's Track & Field Games hopes to attract 500,000 participants to compete in local, district, state and provincial meets held across North America this spring. At least five finalists from each of the 50 states, 10 Canadian provinces and three Canadian territories will ultimately qualify for the North American Final Meet, which will be held in August at Henry Hershey Field. In total, more than 500 athletes participate in the final event and have the chance to meet some of the greatest athletes in track and field history, such as Olympians Carl Lewis and Bruce Jenner.
The Hershey's Track and Field Games are free to all area youth and advanced mail or online registration is the only method of entry in 2013. Entry forms are available at the Jamestown Cycle Shop and Jamestown Family YMCA. Local entry forms and additional information is available online at www.chautauqua-striders.org.
A copy of each child's birth certificate must accompany all entry forms or be brought to registration on May 30.
The top two finishers in each event advance to the New York State West Finals on June 29 in Herkimer. State meet winners do not automatically advance to the North American Finals, but are entered into a regional pool and become eligible for selection to a regional team which will travel to Hershey on Aug. 3 to compete in the North America Finals.
