James (Jim) Purpura, 90, of Jamestown, N.Y., entered into God's Glory surrounded by his family on May 20, 2013, at Lutheran Social Services.
James was born Oct. 9, 1922, in Jamestown, N.Y., the son of Matthew Purpura and Calogera "Carrie" Schiabetta Purpura. He was raised in Jamestown, N.Y. and attended Jamestown Public Schools. He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II in London, England. He retired from Carborundum (Monofrax) in 1983. Following his retirement he worked with his family at South Hills Country Club.
Jim was an avid golfer, and bowler and loved music, singing, and danc-ing. He and his wife Sara helped start and were active members of the Quadrillia Dancers for more than 20 years. They also performed with the Chautauqua Squares. He was a member of the American Legion, Moose club, War Vets and a life member of the VFW.
He was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church in Jamestown, N.Y.
Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Sara "DiGregorio" Purpura; a sister, Josephine Burch also of Jamestown, N.Y.; children: Diana (Bruce) Mace of Ocala, Fla., James (Suzanne) Purpura of Jamestown, N.Y., Jerry (Sheryl) Purpura of Ocala, Fla., Daniel (Marcia) Scapelitte, Frank Scapelitte, and Joseph (JoAnn) Scapelitte; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters and a granddaughter.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in St. James Catholic Church. The Rev. Darrell G. Duffy, pastor, will be the celebrant. Entombment will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. Thursday in the Migliore Funeral Home, where a Christian Wake Service will be led by Sister Rose Therese DiGregorio at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
