MEDINA - The upset of the Section 6 Class B-2 baseball playoffs took place when No. 12 Southwestern eliminated No. 5Medina (10-5). in the prequarterfinals on Monday.
Southwestern (5-10) built up a 6-0 lead in the second inning and then held on for a 6-5 win.
Jake Pilling went the distance on a six-hitter with four strikeouts and two walks. The only trouble he got in was the sixth when Barnes slammed a grand-slam home run.
Pilling put the Mustangs down in order in the seventh to preserve an upset win for the Trojans.
Stolen bases were a main factor as the Trojans swiped nine, including two each by Kyle Radack and Matt Martin.
Martin and Radack had two hits each for the Trojans with Martin keying a five-run fifth inning with a two-run single.
Southwestern plays at No. Akron today.
FALCONER TOPS R-H
MIDDLEPORT - Jake Youngberg became the hero as Falconer pulled off a baseball surprise in the Section 6 Class C prequarterfinal Monday afternoon.
Youngberg tripled in the winning run in the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie and give No. 10 Falconer (4-14) a 3-2 edge over No. 7 Royalton-Hartland.
That win means that Falconer travels to No. 1 Fredonia today for a 5 p.m. battle. Falconer has lost previously twice to Fredonia.
The seventh inning uprising began with a one-out single by Kyle Petersen and then Youngberg, who earlier had singled, came up with his timely hit.
Mike Wilcox got out of a second and third base situation by fanning the final batter to annex the win. Wilcox went the route, scattering five hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.
Wilcox pitched shutout ball over the last six innings after allowing at two-run home run to Judd Jamieson in the first inning.
A.J. Genco singled in a run in the Falconer third inning and Tommy Fales' single brought in the tripling Dan Williamson in the fourth for the Golden Falcons.
