BUSTI - The Stateline racing family remembered Paula Southwell, daughter of E-Mod racer Butch Southwell last Saturday. Paula was lost in a tragic motorcycle accident two weeks ago. The memorial held in her honor started after a four-wide salute and ended with Dave Hess Jr. in victory lane.
Dave Hess Jr. was a dual winner Saturday night at Stateline Speedway, claiming both the Super Late Model and E-Mod divisions. See additional photos at cu.post-journal.com.

Hess Jr. passed Boom Briggs in the early laps of the Super Late Model race and led the remaining laps. Robbie Blair followed, but could not catch the high-flying Hess.
Hess Jr. exchanged his Super Late for his E-Mod and came from fourth to win the Paula Southwell E-Mod Memorial. Hess took the lead from early leader Leonard Enos with a lap-19 pass and outran Randy Hall for the win.
Brandon Groters made a late-race pass of point-leader Brian Crandall to win a caution-filled Street Stock feature.
Jim Kibbe led every lap of the Super Sportsman feature repeating the feat he first accomplished two weeks ago.
Scott Gurdak won his first Crate Late Model feature, leading every lap in the caution-filled event.
Chris Ottaway led every lap of the caution-free Limited Late feature for his first win of the season.
Steve Keith led every lap of the Super Challenger event for his first win of the season.
Pat Fielding and point leader Brian Crandall were on the front row for the Street Stock feature. Crandall showed his strength, jumping out to a 10 car-length lead. Nick Reale slowed to a stop before the second lap was complete for the first yellow of the event. Two incidents marred the restart with John Britt and Victor Earle Jr. in turn one and Jerry Fish and Guy Adams in the exit of turn two. Lap three was complete as the yellow flew once more as Reale spun to stop between turns one and two.
Groters was joined by Richard Wojtowicz to chase Crandall. Wojtowicz did a half-spin in the exit of turn four for caution three with seven laps complete. Wojtowicz did not stop so he remained in the second starting spot for the restart. Crandall remained the leader, running the inside of the track with Groters trying the high line. A lap-10 incident caused caution five. Debris brought out caution six on the next lap. Groters passed Crandall during the restart lap and then Cody Bliss and Britt tangled on the front stretch during the restart for caution seven. Elaine Best struggled on the lap 11 restart for caution eight. Ken Lamp Jr. was the next with problems, rolling to a stop in the exit of turn two for caution nine. Point leader Crandall could not catch Groters who collected his first checkers of the season.
Briggs led the first circuit of the Super Late Model feature with Hess Jr. second, Robbie Blair third and Greg Oakes fourth. Hess tested Briggs on the high side on lap three then moved to the bottom to edge Briggs at the line. Ron Davies was fifth with Chris Hackett sixth. Blair beat Briggs around for the second spot on lap seven as Hess led by several car lengths. At halfway, Hess was still in front of Blair. A lap-14 incident saw John Lacki spin after contact with John Volpe for the first yellow.
Hess was still the strongest car, moving away from Blair and the rest of the field after the restart. Oakes was third with Ron Davies fourth and Hackett fifth. Hess controlled the remaining laps for his first Stateline win of the season and his 17th Super Late win at Stateline.
Leonard Enos led the first three laps of the Paula Southwell E-Mod Memorial. Steve Rex caused the first yellow with an incident in turn four. Veteran Ron Seeley lost the handle on the restart for yellow number two. Enos, Greg Johnson, Hess, Randy Hall and Brent Rhebergen were the leaders. Hess took the second on the restart, but a five-car tangle on the exit of turn four collected Dave Scott, Brian Fardink, Chad Carlson and Kevin Peru, sending Hess back to second for the restart. All were able to continue except Scott. Enos was not being chased by Hess and Hall with Johnson a distant fourth. Hess dove under Enos on lap 18, but Enos did a crossover to stay the leader. Hess made the move stick one lap later and Hall set Enos back another spot on the next lap. Brian Wilson spun in turn one for the fourth yellow. Hess set sail after the restart, but a spin by Cale Crocker on lap 28 set up a two-lap single file dash for the win. Hess got the jump on the restart and pulled away for the win.
Jim Kibbe was once again the Super Sportsman leader, passing Ron Burgun on the start of their feature event. The yellow appeared with five laps complete as Robert Janowiak went spinning down the front straight. A spin by Mike Murray on the restart brought out the second caution. The caution reappeared for Norm Kloszewski after he stopped up against the fence in turn three. Three cars tangled on the restart, sending Matt Kosinski to the pits on the hook. Janowiak stopped on the speedway as the green reappeared for caution four and during the caution Dan Nocero Jr. broke on the front stretch. For the second week in a row Kibbe led every lap of the Sportsman feature.
A wreck on the initial lap of the Crate Late feature caused a complete restart. Justin Tatlow spun, collecting Chad Ruhlman. Scott Gurdak was the leader with Joe Buccola alongside. Gurdak took the lead on the restart with Buccola a distant second. Rob Pietz spun with five laps down for the second yellow. Ed Carley passed Buccola for the runner-up spot with Bob Dorman running fourth. Skip Jackson spun with seven laps down for yellow three. Dorman spun into the infield on lap eight for yellow four. Two more laps were complete when a yellow appeared for Dorman, who spun to a stop in turn one. Pietz spun again on lap 14 for the sixth caution. On the next circuit Dorman and Nicolas Mohawk tangled, ending Dorman's night. Zack Carley collected the next yellow on the restart. Gurdak finished the event unchallenged with Ed Carley second Buccola third.
Chris Ottaway started on the pole of the Limited Late feature and took the early lead. Dustin Eckman was second followed by last year's champ and winner on opening night, Steve Kania. Ottaway slowly extended his lead as the race remained green. Kania was able to stay with Eckman as they ran for runner-up, but could not mount a challenge. Eckman was able to close a little with Ottaway in the final few laps, but not enough to threaten for the win.
