The Rotary Club of Lakewood-Chautauqua South presented a donation of $1,300 to Dr. John Rydzik of Hamburg, chairman of Gift of Life Committee of Rotary District 7090. Gift of Life of Rotary District 7090 is a program of the Rotary Clubs in Southern Ontario and Western New York that provides life-saving surgery to children with congenital heart defects. Many of the children are from underdeveloped countries without facilities for providing this type of surgery. Gift of Life of Rotary District 7090 is affiliated with Gift of Life International.
The medical records of afflicted children are submitted to Rotary clubs in 164 countries for review at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto or Women and Children's Hospital in Buffalo. Surgeons and medical staff provide their services at no cost. The hospitals charge a minimal fee to cover costs.
Parent and child are housed with a host Rotary member or at Ronald McDonald House, and follow-up care is provided after the child returns to his or her country. Gift of Life International has treated more than 15,000 children worldwide since 1975, and District 7090 Rotary Clubs in Southern Ontario and WNY have saved 33 children since 1996.
