The Post-Journal

After four years of training and a five-hour testing of skills in self defense (waza), forms (kata) and Kumite (sparring), and in-depth knowledge of the martial arts to reach black belt, five Johnson's Black Belt Academy students were promoted to their respective black belt ranks. In front is ninth-degree black belt Hanshi Rick Johnson, the chief instructor. In back, from left, are Alexis Nyquist, Sydney Nuhfer, Troy Shattuck and Stephen Ashbaugh, all promoted to first-degree black belt. Absent was Kathy Watters, promoted to fifth-degree black belt with 20 years experience and a new title of Shihan or expert instructor.
