CANANDAIGUA - Jamestown Community College (19-23, 18-13) split an NJCAA Region 3 Division III baseball doubleheader at Finger Lakes CC on Sunday and the second-game loss was costly.
The Jayhawks won the first game, 5-4, but they lost the second, 7-6, in eight innings after leading 6-1 heading in to the bottom of the sixth. Finger Lake won with one out in the eighth.
If JCC had won the second game, it would have earned a berth in the Region 3 Division III Tournament. Now the Jayhawks will need a lot of help.
On Tuesday, Niagara County CC plays a twin bill at Alfred State College and JCC needs NCCC to win both games. However, the Jayhawks also need Finger Lakes to loss a pair of games at Onondaga CC.
If all that happens, JCC will be in the regionals.
If Finger Lakes and Onondaga split their Tuesday doubleheader, JCC is still alive.
Alfred State would have to come to Diethrick Park to complete a suspended game with the Jayhawks that is tied 9-9 in the top of the seventh inning. Alfred State has a man on second base with none out.
On Sunday in the top of the eighth inning, JCC had the bases loaded and didn't score. In the bottom of the frame, Finger Lake's leadoff hitter walked and stole second. After another walk, the runners moved up with one out on a passed ball and the lead runner scored on a single
JCC's top hitter was Connor Borowski with two singles and two RBIs, Gowanda graduate Christian VanNote picked up a single and a double and Josh Allan had an RBI double.
In the first game, JCC scored four runs in the first inning and one in the second and then saw Finger Lakes rally in the seventh with three runs, but the comeback fell short.
Falconer graduate Rick Allen pitched six innings for the win and VanNote go the save.
Borowski had a single, a double and one RBI while Allan had two singles and an RBI, VanNote had two singles and Greg Marco had an RBI single.
