The Jamestown YMCA will host a weekend-long Tai Chi workshop, taught by Margaret Matsumoto from May 10-12.
Matsumoto is the director of teacher training for the Tai Chi Foundation in New York City. She has taught beginning through advanced students, as well as overseeing the Tai Chi Foundation's Teacher Training Program, for more than 35 years.
Tai Chi strengthens and revitalizes the body, calms the mind and engenders a sense of lighthearted happiness. In addition to helping maintain optimal health, research shows doing Tai Chi can make a significant difference in dealing with a wide range of serious illnesses, from cancer to heart disease, as well as physical pain, mental and emotional stress.
"We're delighted to be partnering with the Tai Chi Foundation and to welcome an educator with expertise the level of Ms. Matsumoto," said Meg Pickard, YMCA wellness director. "Our hope is to expand on the success we're seen with our Moving for Better Balance program which has its origins in Yang style Tai Chi and to introduce a wider audience to the benefits of Tai Chi."
The weekend workshop will begin with a free sample class on Friday, May 10, from 7:15-8:30 p.m.
"I welcome adults of all ages to come and try it," Matsumoto said. "When we move with Tai Chi relaxation, we not only feel better, but we often experience a sense of calm and alertness that can boost both personal and work-related interactions. I invite you to come and experience it first-hand."
The weekend workshop will continue through Sunday, May 12. Comfortable street clothes that allow a natural walking gait are preferable to tight clothing or heavy work-out sweats. No other special equipment is needed. There will be opportunities to sit and rest, and the schedule will include breaks. Light refreshments will be provided throughout the weekend.
