The Lakewood Area Distinguished Young Women Program extends an invitation to high school junior girls who will be college-bound students to consider participation in the 2014 program. Distinguished Young Women is a nationally recognized program that celebrates the achievements of high school senior girls while providing scholarship awards.
There will be an information meeting on Monday, May 13, at 6:30 p.m. at Love Elementary School in Jamestown. Parents and/or prospective candidates are invited to attend. Committee members along with this year's 2013 Distinguished Young Woman, Veronica Schuver, will be present to discuss the various aspects of the program and answer any questions regarding participation. The meeting is not mandatory; it is strictly informational.
Acceptance to the program will be based on a review of the candidate's school transcript, her community and school activities and a five-minute interview. The interviews will be held on Thursday, May 16, from 6-8 p.m. and Sunday, May 19, from 1-3 p.m. at Love Elementary School in Jamestown. Candidates can choose either date and arrive at any time within the two-hour span. They need to bring an unofficial school transcript and picture (can be a school picture or candid shot). They will also complete a short application, listing school and community activities.
Fifteen candidates will be chosen to participate in the program. Rehearsals will run during the summer and twice a week in September and October. The experience will culminate with the performance at Jamestown High School on Saturday, Nov. 2.
Any questions may be directed to Christine Yocum at 397-7866 or Danielle Bongiovanni at 640-1327.
