Thirty people, including several new members, attended the first business meeting of the year of the Chautauqua County Antique Equipment Association recently at the Laona United Methodist Church.
The main topic of discussion was preparation for the Plow Day and Gas Up to be held next to the Stockton show grounds on May 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Plowing demonstration days are popular with many tractor and equipment organizations, but this will be the first for the Chautauqua County group. It will be combined with and take the place of the traditional spring member Gas-Up party at which members gather socially to start up and show off restoration projects completed over the winter. Plow Day participants must be members, but memberships will be available on the day. There will be an area reserved for garden tractors also. The event is open to the public, and there will be no fee or charge for spectators.
The members also made plans to improve the buildings on the grounds. These plans include electricity and water for the new pavilion followed by pouring a concrete floor. The museum will be painted and a porch added. An inventory of historical items and artifacts owned by the Association should be completed. Gates should be erected on the grounds, and the restrooms will be repainted. Work sessions are usually held Wednesday evenings. The first will be May 1.
The association accepted an invitation from the Busti Historical Society to hold its April 23 business meeting at the Busti Mill, where members will get a tour of the restored and the running mill and machinery.
Plans were discussed for the Aug. 16-18 annual Antique Equipment Show, this year featuring the White family of tractors and equipment. The members voted to ask the Old Dawg Bluegrass band to return for another Saturday afternoon performance at the show. Ray Bulger, association president, said the Stockton Fire Department will present a chicken barbecue all three days as it did last year. Bulger also specified that future meetings will begin with a pledge of allegiance to the flag.
