Harold L. Carlson, 86, formerly of Goose Creek Road, Ashville, and Cowing Road, Lakewood, died at 10:50 p.m. Wednesday (April 10, 2013), in Heritage Green Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing.
He was born Oct. 17, 1926, in the town of Carroll, the son of Alem and Nora Bohall Carlson.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in Korea and Okinawa. Prior to retiring, he was employed for several years as a sheet metal worker at Dawson Metal Co., and following his retirement was a crossing guard at Lakewood Elementary School.

A huge fan of the New York Yankees, he was a good cook who also enjoyed fishing, making model airplanes, and was always very proud of his vegetable and flower gardens. Most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Surviving are three daughters: Linda M. (Steven) Larson of Nineveh, Ind., Susan N. (David) Lantz of Lakewood, and Janice R. (Howard) Wheeler of Ashville; eight grandchildren: Scott S. Larson and Jeremy P. Larson, both of Indiana, Christopher J. Larson of Illinois, Heather M. Beierle and Allison L. Lantz, both of Binghamton, N.Y., Holly M. Williams of Jamestown, James R. Bessey Jr. of Ohio, and Julianne R. Bessey of Busti; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Elenora Fardink of Mayville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou Durante Carlson, whom he married Nov. 2, 1947, in St. Gabriel Church in New Rochelle, N.Y., and who died Jan. 3, 1994; a son, Harold L. Carlson Jr. on Dec. 3, 1976; and by several brothers and sisters.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home. Howard Wheeler will officiate. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
