SHERIDAN - Brush fire season has officially hit Chautauqua County.
Firefighters in Sheridan battled two fires Sunday morning, the largest coming on Route 39. Firefighters from Sheridan and Forestville were summoned to the brush fire, while members of the Chautauqua County Fire Police Team were dispatched as well.
Tony Faso, northern Chautauqua County first battalion coordinator, said crews were alerted around 5:20 a.m. to Route 39 for a report of a fire near the woods.
Faso said firefighters were able to contain the blaze, which came close to at least two nearby structures. The fire coordinator attributed wind and dry grass as a factor, but did not release a cause of the fire.
"We are in brush fire season, which goes from March through May," Faso said. "But we really don't know what started the fire here. It's still under investigation."
He added: "There was some wind out there, and it did have an impact."
Sheridan firefighters also responded to a smaller brush fire on Sunday, as did crews from Brocton and Portland.
