MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Maple Grove opened its baseball season by suffering a 7-2 setback to West Springfield, Va., at the Mingo Bay Classic Tournament.
Despite surrendering a first-inning run, the Red Dragons (0-1) knotted the game when Nolan Knipe drove in Aaron Germain in the second inning, and then took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third when Will Lucas connected on an RBI double to score Jonah Tanner.
That lead stood until the fourth inning, when West Springfield (3-2), a Class 4A school (which is the largest classification in Virginia), plated three runs following a single by Mark Shergart.
West Springfield tallied three more runs an inning later.
Jake Swan started for the Red Dragons and took the loss after going 4 innings with four strikeouts and four walks. Lucas came on in relief and hurled two scoreless innings, fanning three and walking two.
Along with Lucas, Collin Stack and Josh Ahlstrom both hit doubles.
Maple Grove will play two more games today. The first is at 10 a.m., against Williamsport, Pa., and the second is at 7 p.m., against Virginia High School.
