Frewsburg Residents Report Odor Of Natural Gas; No Leaks Found

FREWSBURG - More than 100 residents have reported smelling natural gas in Frewsburg, according to an investigator on scene. Officials at National Fuel, though, say no natural gas leaks have been found.

A half-dozen National Fuel trucks could be seen throughout Frewsburg. Many residents have reported a rotten egg smell.

"I can tell you at this time there is no natural gas emergency," spokeswoman Karen Merkel said. "There are currently no gas leak readings being taken."

Merkel said the rotten egg smell is a chemical placed in the odorless gas to detect leaks. It's unclear at this time what has caused the widespread reports, she said.

"We can't confirm at this time what is causing the smell," she said.
