Federico Fellini, Italian film director once said, "A different language is a different vision of life."
The Southwestern Middle School L.O.T.E. (Languages Other Than English) department wants to encourage students to expand their vision of life by learning new languages and exploring new cultures.
Students have been having a great time learning Spanish this year. There are many unique activities included in the curriculum. For example, as an alternate measure of achievement, students are asked to produce a project, either three-dimensional or two-dimensional, of their choice for each of the major vocabulary units this year. This gives the students a chance to do something hands-on, and provides students who may have trouble with test-taking another opportunity to show their work and their individuality. At the same time, the students are actively engaged in learning the vocabulary.
