Stuart Rinehart, son of John and Nancy Rinehart of Lakewood, was the overall and seventh grade level winner of the Buffalo News Spelling Bee with the winning word, "documentary."
The spelling bee was held recently in the Southwestern High School auditorium. Lucas Peterson was the runner-up and eighth grade level winner, while Thea Keppel was the sixth grade level winner.
Forty-three students participated in the contest. Diane LaGrega was chairperson and organized the spelling bee. Judges were Julia Casselman, Mary Kay Cook and Martha Johnson. The pronouncer, Tim Becker was, as always, kept on his toes because competition was high and the words proved to be challenging.
From left are Thea Keppel, sixth-grade level winner; Stuart Rinehart overall and seventh-grade level winner; and Lucas Peterson, runner up and eighth-grade level winner.
Rinehart took the county level spelling test recently. The top scorers from each of the 10 contest divisions, and the next 10 top scorers overall, will be invited to participate in the Western New York Oral Finals on Sunday.
