Annual egg production in New York for the 2012 production year was 1.31 billion eggs, a 4 percent increase from the 1.26 billion produced in 2011, according to King Whetstone, U.S. Agriculture Department National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York Field Office director.
There was an average of 4.49 million layers in New York during the 12-month period, an increase of 5 percent from the previous year. Average annual production per layer was 292 eggs, a slight decrease from 2011.
All chicken inventory, excluding commercial broilers, as of Dec. 1, 2012, totaled 6.06 million, a 7 percent increase from the 5.65 million one year earlier. Total chicken inventory on Dec. 1, 2012, included 4.69 million layers, 1.36 million pullets, and 8,000 other chickens, a 4 percent increase, an 18 percent increase, and unchanged, respectively.
The average value per bird in New York on hand Dec. 1, 2012, was $2.30, an increase of 28 percent from a year ago. The total value of all flocks in the state on Dec. 1, 2012, was $13.9 million, an increase of 36 percent from the $10.2 million in 2011.
Nationally, egg production during the year ending Nov. 30, 2012, totaled 92.9 billion eggs, a 1 percent increase from 2011. Table egg production, at 80.5 billion eggs, increased 2 percent from the previous year. Hatching egg production, at 12.4 billion eggs, decreased 3 percent from 2011. Layer numbers during 2012 averaged 340 million, a slight increase from the year earlier. The annual average production per layer on hand in 2012 was 274 eggs, a 1 percent increase from 2011. The total number of chickens on hand on Dec. 1, 2012, excluding commercial broilers, was 456 million birds, a 2 percent increase from last year. The total value of all chickens on Dec. 1, 2012, was $1.85 billion, a 9 percent increase from Dec. 1, 2011. The average value increased from $3.80 per bird on Dec. 1, 2011, to $4.06 per bird on Dec. 1, 2012.
