BUSTI - By the end of the month, the goals and objectives for Busti's future will be mapped out.
The Busti Comprehensive Plan Committee is almost done with a list of goals and objectives that will be included in the town's comprehensive plan. Todd Hanson, Busti Councilman and Comprehensive Plan Committee chairman, said the group is two-thirds of the way through, with plans to meet again by the end of the month to finalize the list.
Busti's comprehensive plan will layout in an organized fashion the future design of the town. The plan assists town officials when applying for grants and collecting funds for projects. It also helps Busti officials make choices on issues that arise by determining if the decisions abide or conflict with the overall plan for the town.

"The goals and objectives go through a wide range of categories from attracting new families and businesses to enhancing the quality of life for town residents to plans for transportation," he said. "We're trying to find things that need to be addressed either out of necessity or for financial reasons."
Hanson said once goals and objectives have been compiled, the committee will add it to the comprehensive plan's community profile. The community profile is a summary of where Busti was when it started and where it is today. The 45-page document also includes charts, maps and information about trends. It is a factual demographic overview of the town, which can be viewed by going to www.townofbusti.com.
After a final review of the goals and objectives, public meetings will be held. Hanson said at least two meetings will be held. No dates have been determined, but he estimated the meetings will be held in late March or early April.
"We will get the community's response on the goals and objectives we've come up with at the public meetings," Hanson said. "The public meeting will be for anyone who lives in the town. They can come and go through the comprehensive plan. Then they can ask questions and give their input. People might bring up ideas that we might have overlooked or ideas no one has though of yet. This way it can still be added into the comprehensive plan."
Two public meetings on the comprehensive plan were already held in August 2011. Committee officials have also conducted public opinion surveys, held focus groups and conducted research on population, housing and other key community characteristics.
The comprehensive plan is a document town officials will use to determine community goals and aspirations in terms of future development. The document usually includes the plan for public policy in terms of transportation, utilities, land use, recreation and housing. Comprehensive plans typically encompass large geographical areas, a broad range of topics and cover a long-term time horizon. It provides a prioritized list of recommended actions to be taken to realize a shared long-term vision for the town.
Helping Busti officials with the comprehensive plan is Small Town Planning Services. Don McCord, Small Town Planning Services owner and county planning and economic development senior planner, was hired to be a consultant on the comprehensive plan. McCord has also worked on comprehensive plans for the village of Bemus Point and the town of North Harmony.
