The New York State Association of Counties is proud to be the recipient of the 2013 Association Excellence Award in Government Relations, awarded by the Empire State Society of Association Executives.
The award, presented at ESSAE's annual meeting Feb. 7, recognizes NYSAC's work during the 2012 state Legislative session, specifically the mandate relief advocacy brief campaign developed by NYSAC's staff and leadership to educate State lawmakers on the issues that impact counties.
"As the voice of county leaders throughout New York state, NYSAC is steadfast in communicating our challenges and recommendations to state lawmakers. NYSAC did an outstanding job speaking out for New York's counties over the past year," said Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen Jimino.
The campaign receiving ESSAE's Government Relations award is an extension of NYSAC' s 9 for 90 campaign, which identified the nine state mandates consuming 90 percent of the county property tax levy statewide. The advocacy briefs, which can be found at www.nysac.org, were specific recommendations designed to reduce the cost of government at the state and local levels.
"Our association continuously does excellent work. Our board and our staff are passionate about supporting New York State's local governments and working with New York State to alleviate the challenges counties face," said Genesee County Chairwoman Mary Pat Hancock, who lead this advocacy campaign as NYSAC's president in 2012. "NYSAC is fully deserving of the ESSAE Association Excellence Award for Government Relations, and I am proud to be a part of this great work."
"A key component of NYSAC's mission is to advocate to State leaders on behalf of New York State's counties. This award recognizes the dedication, work, and success of NYSAC's members and staff in carrying out that mission," said NYSAC President Edward A. Diana, the Orange County Executive. "Local government is at the heart of our state, and this Association is proud to represent the counties and their elected and appointed officials throughout New York."
