DEPEW - Ryan Schutte was the hero for Southwestern/Maple Grove's hockey team in the Small School Division of the Western New York Club League on Wednesday night.
Schutte converted a pass from Alex Carlson on a power play at 3:33 of the second overtime that gave fifth-seeded Southwestern-Maple Grove a 5-4 upset win over fourth-seeded Depew at the Depew Ice Rink.
Southwestern/Maple Grove will play at second-seeded Cheektowaga on Friday and Saturday at 9 p.m. with the winner advancing to the Super Sectionals the following week. Also, Southwestern/Maple Grove clinched a berth in the State Playoffs next month at Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena
Southwestern/Maple Grove tied the game at 4-4 with just 11 seconds remaining when Curtis Carlson found the range from Alex Carlson.
Then the teams played to a scoreless five minutes of the first overtime before Schutte came through in the second overtime.
Southwestern/Maple Grove began with a 2-0 first period as Curtis Carlson scored from Alex Carlson at 11:12 and Schutte from Andrew Farnham and Alex Carlson at 1:58.
Depew recorded three goals in the second period and Farnham connected from Alex Carlson at 14:06 to tie it for Jamestown at 3-3.
The hosts took the lead at 4-3 with 9:31 left in the third period before Curtis Carlson came up with the tying goal in the waning seconds for Southwestern/Maple Grove.
