New York dairy herds produced 1.12 billion pounds of milk during December.
Milk per cow was up from the previous year resulting in a 4.2 percent increase in milk production compared to December 2011. The number of milk cows averaged 610,000 head, unchanged from December of the previous year. Milk per cow averaged 1,830 pounds, a 75 pound increase from last year at this time.
Dairy farmers in New York received an average of $22.20 per hundredweight of milk sold during December, a 60 cent decrease from November but $1.50 less than December a year ago. Milk production in the 23 major states during December totaled 15.7 billion pounds, a 1.7 percent increase from December 2011.
November revised production at 14.9 billion pounds, increased 1.3 percent from November 2011. The November revision represented an increase of 31 million pounds, or .2 percent, from last month's preliminary production estimate.
Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,848 pounds for December, 30 pounds more than December 2011. The number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.49 million head, 5,000 head more than December 2011, and 16,000 head more than November 2012.
