The Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame, in cooperation with sports historian and 2012 CSHOF inductee Greg Peterson, will screen a DVD showing one of the most famous games in baseball history - Don Larsen's perfect game - at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 6 at the Robert H. Jackson Center in Jamestown. The event is free to the public.
Still the only no-hitter ever pitched in the World Series, and a perfect game at that, the DVD contains the original TV broadcast by Mel Allen and Vin Scully from Game 5 on Oct. 8, 1956. It also includes all the original commercials and complete post-game remarks, and it begins in the top of the second inning.
Brooklyn's starter, Sal Maglie, also pitched well, yielding only five hits, including Mickey Mantle's fourth-inning home run, and striking out the side in the eighth. Interestingly, Maglie pitched for the Jamestown Falcons during the 1940 season when the team played its games at Allen Park before Municipal Stadium was built in 1941. Furthermore, Jamestown native and 1985 CSHOF inductee Irv Noren was a member of the 1956 Yankee team. He was injured and did not play during the World Series, but watched Larsen's gem from the New York dugout.
