KIRTLAND, Ohio -''We just couldn't put the ball in the cup,'' said disappointed coach George Sisson after Jamestown Community College lost a close NJCAA Division 2 women's basketball game to Lakeland CC Thursday night.
JCC never led and had an opportunity to tie, but lost possession with 4.5 seconds left and lost the game, 52-50.
The defeat left the Jayhawks with a 10-4 record and snapped a four-game winning streak. With the victory, Lakeland improves to 3-7.
JCC was behind by eight points late in the second half, but closed within a bucket but turned the ball over for a 29th time.
''We struggled on offense as we shot a season-low 28 percent (20-of-71),'' said Sisson.
The Jayhawks also made only 6 of 11 for 54 percent from the foul line and hit on only four 3-pointers, all by Kelsie Beaver.
Beaver scored 16 points, Taylor Storer 14 and Ashley DePane 12 for the Jayhawks. Alex Smith grabbed 11 rebounds and Kristin Biela nine while Storer had 11 steals and five assists.
Ashley Speight tallied 19 points and Lamia Whitfield 17 points for Lakeland.
JCC returns to action at 4 p.m. today at Lorain County CC in Elyria, Ohio.
