Silver Creek Continues To Roll With Win Over Bears

SILVER CREEK - After dismantling three non-league opponents, Silver Creek proved it could do the same to its Division 2 rivals with an 88-49 win over visiting Frewsburg on Thursday.

Already in this young season, Silver Creek (4-0, 1-0) has had Zed Williams, Steve Marcey and Bill Brooks take over games.

On Thursday, it was Kaine Kettle's turn as the guard poured in 30 points on the overmatched Bears (2-3, 0-1).

"We have a great system and unselfish guys," Silver Creek coach Rob Genco said. "If you try to score 30, you're not going to get it. Somebody's going to pop off for 30. That's what I love about our system. It could be anybody and tonight it was Kaine. He had a couple of great drives and some great shots."

Kettle scored at least five points in every quarter, hit four 3-pointers and connected on a pair of old-fashioned three-point plays.

The Black Knights came out firing as they began the game on an 11-0 run and led 25-6 after seven minutes. The barrage included four treys from three different players.

"If there's a better team in the league, I'd like to see them," Frewsburg coach Tom Nelson said. "I think Silver Creek is going to be very tough to beat."

Just when it appeared that Silver Creek would run away with it, Alex Elderkin put the Bears on his back and kept the game competitive with 13 second-quarter points. He finished with 18 points and seven rebounds.

"I don't want to say it's typical, but he's got some tools," Nelson said of Elderkin. "He can get off the floor and shoot well. Right now he's our only weapon. We need someone else to step up and get that 15-18 points. That's what I'm looking for."

While Elderkin was red hot in the second quarter, Silver Creek was uncharacteristically sloppy on offense. There were bad passes in traffic and some ugly shot attempts.

"Sometimes if we get a good lead our guys try to take chances they don't usually take," Genco explained. "When we start to pull away, sometimes we get sloppy."

Silver Creek's lack of execution didn't last long and the Black Knights built their lead to 50-29 by halftime.

Kettle's 30 points led a quartet of Black Knights in double-digits. Marcey scored 16 with eight assists, Brooks had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Williams had a 'quiet' double-double with 10 points and 12 assists.

"I think it's the system that we run," Genco said of the offensive ability of his team. "We don't dribble up the court. They have the green light to turn and throw. They know where the guys are breaking."

The Silver Creek starters kicked off the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run before taking a well-deserved spot on the bench as Genco had the luxury of playing some of his reserves.

"We have to," he said. "I need to do a better job of having faith in some of those guys because they're going to have to give us minutes eventually. We don't have a lot of depth, but the depth we do have I have to get them ready."

The good news for Frewsburg is it gets another shot at Silver Creek later in the season.

"They're a good team," Nelson said. "Let's see how we do when they come to our place. Let's see how much we improve."
