Forum To Discuss Gas Leases

November 21, 2012
The Post-Journal

LITTLE VALLEY - A public forum on gas leasing will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at the Little Valley Memorial Library, 110 Rock City St., Little Valley.

The forum will be applicable for those considering signing a gas lease, those who are concerned about hydraulic fracking, who want to know more about their current gas lease or are interested in ending their gas lease.

New gas leases can be vastly different from older leases, and even old leases signed years ago could permit shale drilling techniques. New drilling techniques in deep Marcellus and Utica shale layers involve chemical injection into the land under homes, woods, farms, and water wells. The forum is free and open to the public. It will include presentations from Joseph Heath and Michael Bosetti.

Heath is a longtime environmental attorney and general counsel for the Onondaga Nation who has taught communities all over New York about terminating gas leases and managing the questionable ways gas companies seek to extend old leases. Bosetti will share his account of going against the gas company and fighting a pre-existing lease on his property.

The event is sponsored by the Concerned Citizens of Cattaraugus County, WNY Drilling Defense and Food & Water Watch.
