P-J Classic Title Matches On Tap Today In Lakewood

LAKEWOOD - Another day of tennis in the books and the championship matches have been determined for The Post-Journal Classic tennis tournament, held at the Lakewood Family YMCA.

In the Open Singles competition final, Martin Hoch will square off against Jeff Nuhfer at 7 a.m.

Hoch got by Shane Burns, 6-1 and 6-1, in the quarterfinals and then defeated Tom Anderson, 6-0, 6-2, in the semifinals to reach the championship round while Nuhfer took care of quarterfinal foe Jay Bowen, 6-1, 6-0, and Jim Panebianco, 6-1, 6-3.

The Mole sisters, Rachel and Rochelle, will be in the hunt for the Women's Open Doubles title. The Moles reached the finals by defeating the tandem of Amy Raynor and Linda Rogers, 6-2, 6-2. Their opponents are Jan Coleman and Brooke Sheesley, who handled Anette Milller and Carolyn Becker in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-3.

Those finals are set for 8:30 a.m.

Ben Wright edged Troy Burns, 7-6 (5), 6-2, and then beat Matt Johnson, 6-3, 6-4, to earn a place in the "A" Singles championship match, slated for 7 a.m., against Cooper Miller while Sheesley, who went 2-0 in round robin play, must meet Andrea Cuevas in the Women's "A" Singles.

In Men's "A" Doubles, Michael Maturna and Ben Wright are scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. finals bout with Johnson and Miller.

Anderson and Panebianco, meanwhile, will face Kyle Hosier and Jorn Van Der Veer in the Men's Open Doubles championship at 8:30 a.m.

Mikayla Johnson and Abby Kreinheder hold a slim lead in the Junior "B" Doubles competition with 15 games, they are ahead of Josh Thompson and Neil Gens, who have captured 12 games.

Quinn White leads Joey Gerace by one game, 21-20, in the Boys 15 and under singles division; Victoria VanEvery is ahead of Heidi Meuller, 21-19, in the Girls 15 and under singles division; Ryan Whisner trails Mikayla Johnson by three games, 20-17, in the Junior 13-and-under singles competition and Carolyn Becker is tops in the Junior 17-and-under singles division with 22 games, just one more than Connor Clendenen.

The finals for boys and girls 15 and under, and the junior 13 and under, will be at 7 a.m.

Becker will battle Clendenen at 8:30.
