FREDONIA - How President Richard Nixon dramatically altered the federal government's Native American policy to support self-determination for Native American tribes and restoration of their culture will be examined at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in Room 105 of Fenton Hall on the State University at Fredonia campus.
U.S. Archivist David Ferriero will deliver opening remarks and commentary.
The program, "Nixon and the American Indian: The Movement to Self-Determination," was produced by the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. White House and Administration officials who worked with Nixon discuss the leadership, legislation and litigation that was needed to implement the policy and what it meant to the American Indian.
Ferriero is the 10th archivist in U.S. history and is the chief official overseeing the operation of the National Archives and Records Administration. He was appointed by President Obama to the post in 2009.
The program is free and open to the public.
