Lakewood Tables Used-Car Dealership

LAKEWOOD - The Lakewood Village Board is holding off on approval for a proposed used-car dealership on Fairmount Avenue.

The board tabled a resolution to approve a special-use permit submitted by Lawrence Spacciapolli regarding a proposal to establish the lot at 373 E. Fairmount Ave., on the corner of Fairdale Avenue. Wordelmann said each board member has heard several residents voice concern about the proposal for a car lot at that location, which is the spot of the former Carnahans Clothing Company.

''We had several residents come before the board. They expressed their displeasure with a used-car lot on that corner. There are safety concerns,'' he said. ''Most board members, including myself, have received several phone calls and comments against it. We decided to give it more time to think about what is the right thing to do instead of making a snap decision to say 'No' or 'Yes.'''

Last month, the board voted down a motion to not accept the special-use permit application. Spacciapolli operates Larry Spacc auto dealers. He said the business would have about 50 cars on the lot. The building on the property would be renovated and used for office space. The third-generation family business, which has been in operation since 1956, has auto sales lots in Dunkirk and Westfield.

In other business, the Village Board tabled again the resolution to fund $7,500 to the town of Busti for the 2013 operating expense for the Busti-Lakewood Recreation Commission. The board tabled the resolution last month, as well.

Wordelmann said there is some confusing on the revenues for the recreation commission.

''In the budget they gave us detailing revenues, it didn't show the town revenue in it. We asked for an update on that and we didn't receive anything,'' he said. ''Normally, they have a $15,000 figure for the town. We just want clarification on that.''

Last year, how much money the village and town pay toward the recreation commission started the debate on if one municipality is paying more for shared services. Last October, the Village Board tabled funding the commission $15,000 before agreeing to appropriate $7,500. The board agreed one reason to lower the amount of funding was there was a surplus of more than $80,000 for the recreation commission. The board agreed if all the money isn't being used each year, maybe the amount appropriated should be decreased.
