SARANAC LAKE - ''The tires fell off,'' is how first-year coach George Sisson described the second half for Jamestown Community College (2-2) in the first night of a women's basketball tournament at North Country CC.
The Jayhawks trailed Rockland CC by just a 40-39 margin at halftime, but the second half belonged to the Lady Hawks by a wide spread of 41-21 en route to a 81-60 verdict.
''We got off to a great start,'' said Sisson, who watched the Jayhawks jump out to a 24-11 lead.
Leading the charge was Ashley DePane with two 3-pointer while Taylor Storer and Kelsie Beaver had one each.
However, Rockland made 11 of 13 foul shots and Nikki Saponaro made two 3-pointers as it took a one-point halftime edge.
''They put pressure on us out front with their guards Melissa Loughnane and Saponaro,'' said Sisson.
Loughnane had 10 points and Saponaro nine in the second half.
Saponaro finished with 21 points, Loughnane 19, Erika Richards 14 and Alex Gundermann 12 for the winners.
''We got in foul trouble in the second half and Taylor Storer picked up her fourth foul with 16 minutes left,''said Sisson.
DePane was the only Jayhawk in double figures with 16 points, but the JCC foul shooting was very good with 17 of 19.
Rockland wasn't bad either with 14-of-18.
JCC plays Word of Life Bible Institute at noon today.
