DRYDEN - Coach George Sisson and the Jamestown Community College women's basketball team got off to a good start in their season-opening basketball game on Saturday afternoon.

With Ashley DePane, Taylor Storer and Lauren Saglimben all hitting double figures in the first half, the Jayhawks started fast and went on to post an 85-71 victory over Tompkins-Cortland CC in NJCAA, Region 3, Division III action.

DePane was red-hot with 18 points followed by Storer with 15 and Saglimben with 12 as the Jayhawks took a 51-32 halftime lead.

DePane wound up with a career-high 26 points, including four 3-pointers. In her collegiate debut, Storer added 17 points, with nine assists and eight steals in a fine all-around effort and Saglimben also had a career high 18 points.

Lauren Biela grabbed 13 rebounds and Brooke Draggett 12 for the Jayhawks.

''It was nice to get a win because we only had one preseason scrimmage with Pitt-Bradford to get us ready,'' said Sisson, who took over the coaching duties from Keith Martin, who is now JCC's athletic director.

Midway through the second half, Tompkins-Cortland got within 10 points before the Jayhawks regained the momentum.

Kelsie Beaver and DePane scored eight points while five other women scored for JCC in the second half.

Beaver finished with 10 points, including six-of-seven from the foul line.

Coriesha Hickey and Becka Holton each had 18 points in the loss.

JCC is right back in action with a 1 p.m. game today with visiting Niagara College of Canada.
