Bob L. Henderson

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Bob L. Henderson, 87, passed away peacefully in the arms of his loving wife of 37 years, Dawn, on Oct. 25, 2012, while residing at the Solace Center, Asheville, N.C.

Bob was born Oct. 6, 1925, in Roswell, S.D., the son of the late Joseph and Hazel Hurst Henderson.

Bob served his country in the Army's 11th Armored Division as a tank operator where his tank was hit by enemy fire resulting in the loss of his leg. Bob was awarded the Purple Heart for Military Merit. Bob attended Greenville and Illinois universities earning a master's degree in social work and became the director of Family Counseling Services.

Surviving are his wife Dawn; four children: daughter, Cherie Henderson of Asheville, and sons: Timothy (Beth) Henderson of Maryland, William (Lynn) Henderson of North Carolina, and David Henderson of Ohio. He is also survived by four step-children: Valerie (Charlie) Heggarty, William Constantine, Michelle (Fred) Landy and Paul Constantine. Bob was also the proud grandfather of Eliza-beth and Sharon Back, Sam and Mack Henderson, and Emily Henderson; as well as five step grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Bob enjoyed family and friends. He was a wonderful artist, painting beautiful oil paintings, and his love of the Asheville scenery and landscapes where the subject of many of his works. Bob was also well known for his political mind and energetic debates with those willing to participate. He wrote many editorials for the Asheville Citizen Times.

A memorial service will be held at the Solace Center, Belvedere Road on Friday, Nov. 2, at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be at the VA Cemetery, Black Mountain.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to the charity of one's choice; or CarePartners Hospice; or the American Heart Association.
