CARROLL On Tuesday, Nov. 6, Carroll residents will select one of two candidates for a town council position.
The candidates are Patty Ekstrom, who is running on the Democratic Party line, and Harold Whitford Jr., who is running on the Republican and Conservative party lines.
Voting polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Election Day. The Post-Journal asked each candidate three questions and below are their responses.
Harold Whitford Jr.
Q: What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the town of Carroll and how would you handle the issue as a part of the Town Council?
Ekstrom: The Jones-Carroll Dump remains to be the biggest challenge facing the town. This dump will have a huge impact on our community. The families that border the dump deserve to have the town continue to fight in preventing the dump from moving forward. I will support the board and community with this current challenge.
Whitford: Maintaining the style of living that we enjoy in the town of Carroll without unreasonable tax increases or loss of services. I think attracting small businesses to available vacant parcels to revive the use and productivity of the property would create jobs and increase the property value of the parcel. Reviving or developing these parcels could spark improvements in our personal homes.
Q: Why do you want to be a part of the Town Council?
Ekstrom: The main reason I want to run for Town Council is for community involvement. I have found in the past years how fulfilling it is personally to be involved with our community members. I founded the town of Carroll Garden Club and I am spokesperson for the Veteran's Park/Geranium Memorial Service Program. I feel the time is right to continue my involvement in the community by running for Town Council.
Whitford: I have been attending most of the town meetings for over a year now. I have watched, listened and learned. I believe I can make a positive contribution to our town as a member of the Carroll Town Council.
Q: Why should people vote for you to be on the Town Council?
Ekstrom: I am a honest, hard working person with good common sense. I will listen to issues presented to the board with an open mind and do my best to represent our community.
Whitford: I will do my best to make the proper decisions for our town. I believe listening to the people, the workers doing the job, the people that feel the results of the decisions made by their elected officials, is very important to making the proper choices. I will listen to the opinions and suggestions of the people of our town.
