Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

October 27, 2012
The Post-Journal

Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning. That was the unmistakable weather sign the other morning for those who know the truth of those old weather adages.

Before we turn to fully face the change of fortune that is apparent today, though, it seems appropriate to give a thumbs up to the weather that broke just about right all summer and fall. We note as well there is a degree of luck in having Hurricane Sandy on the rampage now rather than hitting the highly populated northeast coast on Election Day.

Can you imagine what conspiracy theorists would make of that? Wonder who they would pick as the big blowhard controlling the weather.

Thumbs up to parents who make the effort to take their children to Fenton History Center in Jamestown this afternoon for a program on traditions of harvest time and Halloween. The 1 to 3 p.m. event is for students in grades 3 through 6. This History Detectives program will explore harvest time and Halloween customs of the early 1800s and 1900s. There will also be bobbing for apples, Victorian era games, and decorating pumpkins. The cost is $8 per child. Fenton History Center is at 67 Washington St. in Jamestown.

And thumbs up to the just-in-time Ellery Sno-Cruisers Snowmobile and Outdoor Show at the Village Casino on Bemus Point tomorrow. You'll find snowmobiles, accessories, clothing, and parts from a variety of vendors, as well as music and food. The show is 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Since we are bowing to the inevitable anyway, here's hoping the weather breaks just about right all winter for snowmobile enthusiasts and skiers.
