Philadelphia Phillies' owner Horace Fogel was expelled from the baseball's National League after having charged in an interview with the Chicago Post that several of the league's umpires, as well as St. Louis Cardinals' manager Roger Bresnahan, had conspired to help the Giants win the 1912 pennant.
Additionally, Viola Kling was born. And this coming Wednesday, she will be turning 100 years old.
On Tuesday at their monthly potluck dinner, the Bishop Overs Guild celebrated the birthday of Kling in addition to discussing their Shoppers' Luncheon and Bake Sale which will take place on Nov. 9. In the next week, Kling will become Jamestown's newest centenarian.
Though people are living longer lives than they ever have before, crossing the century-mark is no small accomplishment. Though Kling's hearing and vision are not what they once were, her mind is still sharp as a nail. She spoke about her secret to keeping vivacity at age 100.
"I walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes everyday no matter how I'm feeling," said Kling. "I don't feel like I'm going to be 100. It keeps me feeling young."
As the Bishop Overs Guild finished up dinner, a birthday cake was presented to Kling. On the very first try, she was able to blow out all of the candles.
"Thank you everyone for coming," said Kling. "Everyone is so nice, and this is so wonderful. I love all of you.
"I think of all the memories I've kept over my life," continued Kling. "Television, radio, cars there weren't many cars around when I was a little girl. I think it is really something to make it to be 100. I feel so good and so happy. Everything is so wonderful."
The Bishop Overs Guild meets once a month to host a potluck dinner at St. Luke's church. The guild is dedicated to helping local outreach programs through charity and volunteerism.
