AUBURN - Sparked by a strong defensive effort, the Jamestown Community College men's soccer team downed Cayuga CC, 1-0, in an NJCAA Region 3 Division III game on Tuesday.
''The defense played solidly,'' said JCC coach Pat Anderson, who praised the performances of freshman Evan Ahlstrom and sophomore Max Murray.
''They were shutting down a lot of things,'' Anderson said.
With the Jayhawks minimizing Cayuga's scoring chances - JCC freshman keeper Ben Morgan had four saves - sophomore Blake Barker provided the game's only goal from 18 yards out with five minutes remaining in the first half on an assist from sophomore Connor Meekins.
Although the Jayhawks (8-7-2, 5-5-2) had other chances, Barker's goal was all they needed, thanks to the strong play of their defense and midfielders.
JCC returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Erie CC.
WOMEN
MAHONEY SHINES
AUBURN - The Jamestown Community College women's soccer team got a great performance from Nicole Mahoney on Tuesday as the Jayhawks (7-6-2) rolled to a 3-1 win over Cayuga CC in Region 3 action.
Mahoney earned the hat trick for the JCC women, who were playing their seventh game in 12 days, according to coach Dana Shelters.
"We needed a day off (Monday)," he said. "We played with a lot more pep today."
Mahoney put JCC on the board 2:30 into the game as Jenny Peterson assisted and about 14 minutes later Mahoney made it 2-0 for the Jayhawks with Jill Slawiak assisting.
Cayuga scored in the second half to cut the advantage to 2-1, but Mahoney wasn't finished as she completed the hat trick with a goal at the 30-minute mark with the assist by Danelle Shelters.
Emily Pleszewski picked up the victory in goal for JCC with six saves. In total, the Jayhawks outshot Cayuga CC, 32-7.
JCC will travel to Erie CC on Saturday with game time set for 2 p.m.
