BROCTON - For some of the players from Brocton who are a part of the Westfield Wolverines football team, Friday night was the only time they were going to be able to play under the lights of their home field.
Dan Ferguson was one of those players and he made it count as he helped lead the Wolverines, in a non-league matchup against the Forestville Hornets, to a 33-0 beat down.
"Those kids come to our place every day, so it was nice for them to get a true home game," Westfield coach Bob North said. "Dan is one of the hardest working kids on this team and it was nice to reward him with a couple of touchdowns. It was just overall nice to give the Brocton kids something to remember."
Despite the score, it took a while for the Wolverines to find some rhythm to their offense, but eventually with a little more than four minutes left in the first quarter, they were able to get on the scoreboard.
Mike Okerlund took a sweep from 2 yards out to score the first points of the game.
"They were putting a lot of guys in the box," North said of Forestville's defense. "Once we figured out who to take our shots with we were able to make some things happen."
Throughout most of the first half, Forestville had problems moving the ball on offense, and Westfield had problems finishing off drives as it turned the ball over on downs in Hornet territory a number of times.
"Turnovers were part of it, but we couldn't get into a rhythm offensively," Forestville coach Scot Greenough said. "When you aren't getting first downs it is just hard to gain momentum."
Westfield did not score again until inside of the two-minute mark of the second quarter.
Ferguson broke off a 45-yard run to give the Wolverines a burst before the half.
A missed extra-point made the score 13-0 with 1:41 left in the first half.
"I thought we played pretty well on defense," Greenough said. "Westfield is very athletic, but we were able to keep them out of the end zone a couple of times. Nate Maines and Cody Jackson played really well on our defense. Overall, I thought they were our strength."
Westfield got one more scoring opportunity before halftime when Devin Emerson's second interception of the game set the Wolverine offense up with good field position.
From there, Dylan MacCubbin connected with Jon Coe on a 33-yard bomb to the end zone.
Coe also caught the two-point conversion to make it 21-0 at the half.
"Nate Maines was doing a good job blitzing for Forestville," North said. "We had some problems with which gaps to cover, but once we started blocking the inside and leaving the outside for Cam Wright to pick up, we started playing better."
On Westfield's first possession of the second half, it was able to put together a 53-yard drive that ate up more than five minutes of clock to score the team's fourth touchdown of the night.
Ferguson tallied his second touchdown of the game, this one on a 5-yard pass from MacCubbin .
Forestville found some momentum offensively, but saw its success end with an interception by Coe.
"Defensively, we did a very nice job," North said. "We got everybody off the bench in the third quarter and to still get a shutout was a big deal."
Another long Wolverine drive was capped off by a 5-yard keeper by Nolan Hunt to make it 33-0.
Hunt also added an interception defensively for Westfield.
Okerlund was Westfield's leading rusher with 186 yards on 23 carries and one score while Ferguson also crossed the 100-yard mark with 110 on 14 carries.
MacCubbin had 64 yards passing with a pair of touchdowns in the win.
Forestville's leading rusher was Maines, who tallied 81 yards on 10 rushes.
