Maple Grove Runners Shine At Southern Tier CC Classic

ST. BONAVENTURE - It was a red letter day for the Maple Grove cross country teams at the annual Southern Tier Cross Country Classic held at St. Bonaventure University on Saturday.

Cory Wefing of Maple Grove recorded the best time for the boys with a 16:36.9 over the 3.1-mile layout as the boys finished in second with 96 points in the Varsity Large Boys race.

In the Varsity Large Girls Race, Lauren Reyda of Fredonia won with a best time of 19:09.2 followed by the Maple Grove tandem of second-place Hope Pietrocarlo with a 19:34.4 and third-place Megan Marsh with a 19:37.9 as the Lady Red Dragons were victorious with 42 points.

Both Maple Grove teams are unbeaten for the regular-season with 9-0 records.

Holly Eliason of Sherman was first with a 20:39.1 and teammate Rebecca King second with a 20:46.2 as Sherman just was edged out Allegany-Limestone for top honors, 39-37, in Varsity Small Girls Race.

In the Varsity Boys, Elmira was the runaway winner with 46 points followed by Maple Grove's 96 and Southwestern's 97.

Josh Ahlstrom finished seventh (18:11.3), Frank Zuroski 16th (18:39.9), Will Lucas 31st (19:39.2) and Matt Marsh 41st (19:56.3) for Maple Grove.

Ryan Hetrick led Southwestern by placing sixth (17:47.5). Teammate Jordan Powers was ninth (18:23.7), Jacob Hinsdale 23rd (19:10.4), Collin Hanson 24th (19:13.1) and Mark Mitchener 35th (19:43.1).

Maple Grove's other finishes in the Varsity Girls Race were Caroline Benson seventh (20:18.4), Taylor Norris ninth (20:28) and Abby Sirwatka 13th (20:56).

Elmira was second with 42 points and Fredonia third with 86.

Southwestern, which had 211 points, was led Emily Kent, who was 27th with 22:30.3.

In addition to Eliason first and King second in Varsity Girls Small Race, Sherman had Katie Pacy with a 21:29.4. Grace Dennis with a 22:56.7 and Journell Hannold with a 24:26.3.

Hannah Seiders of Silver Creek was fifth with a 21:16.6 and Halle Lienhart of Randolph ninth with a 22:37.2 and teammate Kelly Vincent 10th with a 22:49.8.

Ryan Carpenter placed third in the Varsity Boys Small Race with an 18:06 as Sherman was runnerup to Addison of Section 5 with 78 points. Addison was the champion with 35 points.

Hunter Lienhart was sixth with an 18:37.1 and Randolph teammate Devin Parker 10th with an 19:03.9.

Jordan Boland had a 19:18.1, Trevor Gleason a 19:31.5, Justin Svetz a 19:52.8 and Bill Scarem a 21:15.3 for Sherman.
