Board Of Elections To Offer Spanish-Language Ballots

October 4, 2012
The Post-Journal

The Chautauqua County Board of Elections will have Spanish language ballots available at all Jamestown and Dunkirk poll sites due to a high Spanish-speaking population in the two cities, according to census figures.

The board also will have Spanish-speaking poll workers at these sites and Spanish-speaking translators available by phone for all county poll sites.

Voters are also encouraged to visit the Board of Elections website at www.votechautauqua.com. The website has the ability to translate website content into Spanish and other languages and Spanish language sample ballots, absentee applications and voter registration forms are readily available.

"Our office has been working with the State Attorney General's Office to enhance voting opportunities for Chautauqua County residents," said Brian Abram and Norman P. Green, county election commissioners, in a joint statement.

The general election will be from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6. The last day to register to vote for the upcoming election is with a form postmarked on or before Oct. 12. The last day to register in person at the Chautauqua County Board of Elections, 7 N. Erie St., Mayville, will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13.

Absentee ballot applications are available in English and Spanish at www.votechautauqua.com. Overseas and military voters should follow the link at the Board of Elections website to the Military and Overseas Voters Empowerment site. The last day to postmark an absentee ballot application is Tuesday, Oct. 30, and voters may apply in person and vote at the board's office until 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5.

The Board of Elections daily operating hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. In addition to the Oct. 13 date for voter registration and absentee balloting, the Board of Elections will be open extended hours for absentee voting on two Saturdays and the two Wednesdays before the Nov. 6 election. The election office will have extended hours of 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Oct. 20 and Oct. 27; and until 7 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 24 and Oct. 31.
