Alvin "Al" A. Cupp

Alvin "Al" A. Cupp, 92, of 7907 Titus Road, Sherman, N.Y., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012, at the VA Medical Center, Erie, Pa.

He was born May 3, 1920, in Tyrone, Pa., the son of the late, John and Mary Cupp.

Al had served in the U.S. Army in the 83rd Chemical Battalion from 1942 through 1949, there is a monument for the Chemical Battalion in Huntsville, Ala., with his name on it. Al received the Purple Heart after being hit with shrapnel, his name is in the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor in New Windsor, N.Y. He had worked at Electric Materials for 35 years as a pattern maker.

He was commissioner of Boy Scout Troop 24 of Sherman for 12 years, and he was town constable for 24 years and chief of police for Sherman for 12 years. He was a fireman for the Stanley Hose Co. for 33 years. Al was a life member of VFW Lake Chautauqua Post 8647, and a member of the Community Church of Sherman.

Al loved to hunt and fish, go camping with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Arminita Peru Cupp of Sherman, N.Y., two sons: Larry Cupp of Sherman and LaMont (Cindy) Cupp of Pueblo West, Colo., a daughter, Wendy (Gerald) Hoag of Mayville, N.Y., seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and also by several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Becky Cupp, a grandson, Robbie Cupp, and two sisters.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, at the Spitzer Funeral Home, Sherman, with Pastor Roger Westley of the Community Church of Sherman officiating. Burial will be in Sherman Cemetery.

Friends were received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
