Balancing The Beam

September 25, 2012
The Post-Journal

Zachary Peterson, Jefferson Middle School seventh grader, received a back-to-school refresher in the use of a triple beam balance, which is a type of scale commonly used in the laboratory to determine the mass, by weight comparison, of samples, in Matt Turecek's science class. Students learn about the triple beam balance in sixth grade, however, Turecek gave students practice exercises to prepare them for more difficult science experiments - such as density - which they will be conducting this year in physical science. Experiments in seventh grade also use a higher level of math skills, which the students also prepared for in this beginning of the year exercise.
