SOUTH DAYTON - Edgar Harrison Jay, 91, a retired postmaster for the U.S Postal Service, South Dayton, where he worked for 36 years, died Monday, Sept. 3, 2012, at his home at 7150 Cedar Point Drive, in New Port Richey, Fla. Mr. Jay previously lived in South Dayton, N.Y.
He was born Feb. 11, 1921, in Hamlet, town of Villenova, N.Y., the son of the late Floyd and Bessie (Sharp) Jay.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II having attained the rank of sergeant and enlisted on Nov. 11, 1942, at Buffalo, N.Y., and discharged on Nov. 22, 1945, at Ft. Dix, N.J.
He is survived by a daughter, Michele (David) Stebbins Towns of New Port Richey, Fla.; a son, Robert D. Jay of Springville, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie (Nancy) Caprino Jay in 2003; son-in-law, Anthony "Tony" Stebbins; and two sisters: Mabel Constantine and Helen Alport.
A memorial service will be held Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, at 3 p.m. at Hills Funeral Chapel, 478 Route 83, South Dayton, N.Y. Father Daniel P. Walsh of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, will be officiating. Inurnment will be in the Villenova Cemetery, South Dayton, N.Y.
The South Dayton American Legion Post 1593 and the Pine Valley Veterans of Foreign War Post 2522 will be conducting memorial services.
Family will receive friends at the funeral chapel on Monday from 1 to 3 p.m.
