To the Readers' Forum:
How sad to see that the County Legislature has cut all funding for the local 4-H group. It's also a bit confusing as they don't seem to have a problem finding millions to waste elsewhere.
Let's take a look at some recent actions. First, county taxes increased by about 4 percent this year (and you thought there was a 2 percent property tax cap).
Shortly thereafter, like pulling a rabbit out of a hat, they magically ''find'' $10 million. Despite the fact that nearly every legislator feels every penny of this money should be returned to taxpayers they didn't state so publicly until they tossed millions into the bottomless pits that are the county home and airports.
Also, despite the fact that the county is facing a $14 million deficit next year, they seem to be looking at ways to reduce revenue. I hardly think it's a good time to offer property tax exemptions to new home buyers, especially new homes. I would think that someone who could afford a $200,000-$300,000 new home can afford to pay their fuel taxes like the rest of us.
