Mary L. Stebbins

Mary L. Stebbins, 89, of 43 Harris Ave., died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, in her home.

A Jamestown native, she was born Feb. 25, 1923, a daughter of the late Benjamin and Martha "Mattie" Lanning Mathews.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the former Lakewood Laundromat and earlier had worked for Jamesway.

She was a life member of the Celoron Fishing Association and was an avid bingo player.

Surviving are two children: Judith (John) Hagberg, with whom she made her home, and Bruce Stebbins of Watts Flats; five grandchildren: Lisa (Lee) Burgard of Frewsburg, LaVerne (Rachael) Blair of South Buffalo, Baylee Rose Stebbins and Logan John Stebbins, both of Watts Flats, and John Parker of Sugar Grove, Pa.; five great-grandchildren: Benjamin Burgard, Jacqueline Rae Blair, Travis Blair, Ethan Blair and Gage Wells; and a close family friend, Wanda Pearson, whom she considered a daughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Stebbins, whom she married Dec. 31, 1947, and who died Nov. 6, 2000; a son, John Stebbins Jr., Feb. 11, 1969; four sisters: Harriet Folwell, Florence Steinhoff, Vivian Davis and Martha Carlson; and five brothers: Elmer "Pete," John, Kenneth, Stanley and Robert Mathews.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Deacon Cathy Smith will officiate.

Inurnment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Ashville.

Friends will be received for one hour prior to the service Tuesday in the funeral home.
