Divorce Care Series To Begin

Bemus Point United Methodist Church will offer Divorce Care in a 13-week series beginning Thursday, Sept. 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The 13 weekly seminar topics include: The Road to Healing/Finding Help, Facing My Loneliness, Financial Survival, Forgiveness, and Moving On/Growing Closer to God. Participants are welcome to begin attending the DivorceCare group on any week as the sessions are self-contained. Workbooks for DivorceCare are $15. For additional information about the upcoming DivorceCare series or any other offering at Bemus Point United Methodist Church, please call the church at 386-3401. BPUMC is located at 4954 Bemus-Ellery Road, just mile off I-86 Exit 10 toward Ellery Center.

Healthy Cooking Classes To Begin

Martha Olson, R.N., will host free healthy cooking classes Tuesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 130 McDaniel Ave., beginning Sept. 4. The classes are designed to inform and demonstrate how to reverse various nutritional hindrances that plague families and individuals. For more information, call 575-7138.

Southwestern Board To Meet

The Southwestern Central School Board of Education will hold a work session on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the elementary school cafeteria. The purpose of the meeting is to conduct school business.

Canning Workshop Set For Sept. 5

The Jamestown YMCA will host an Introduction to Canning Workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, to learn how to preserve foods. Participants are asked to bring a paring knife and hand towel with them. All other supplies will be provided. Sponsors are Anderson Produce and Herbs R-4-U Inc. Participants will leave the workshop with knowledge of how to do home-based canning on their own and will take home sample jarred, preserved products made during class. Recipes to be prepared include canned whole tomatoes, ginger peach jam and corn salsa. Space is limited and registration is required by no later than Monday, Sept. 3. Fire Company To Hold Open House

LEON - The Leon Volunteer Fire Company will host its inaugural open house and demonstration day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Leon Fire Hall. The event is open to the public and will include several activities, including demonstrations of firefighting and rescue operations, a Jaws of Life demonstration and a state roll over safety demonstration. Fire equipment will also be available to check fire extinguishers, demonstrate the proper way to use extinguishers and offer for sale other life-saving equipment, including extinguishers and smoke detectors. There will also be a giveaway of Amish items to benefit the fire department. Items include handmade wood items and furniture, quilts and items sold at local shops.
