To the Readers' Forum:
I am pretty straight forward that the current national adminstration is a total failure. We have borrowed trillions of dollars for our great-great-grandchildren to repay. We have passed a monumental tax increase and call it healthcare reform. There will be 39 new taxes implemented with this bill affecting everyone yet our president and Senate leaders call for more tax increases.
My concern today is not these issues but how we got here. Do you know in most national elections that only about 45 percent of eligible citizens vote and in New York it is closer to 41 percent.
I am appalled that my country may fail but even worse it may happen as a result of the votes of about 20 percent of it citizens.
How can you live, work or draw welfare in this the greatest land on earth and not have time and energy to practice you civic responsibilities? For most of us that is to register and vote, I would add an occasional email or phone call to your representatives.
This newspaper has the question of the day. I would love to see one which ask: What are you doing that is so important that you cannot register and vote?
I believe with all my heart that if we let apathy rule on Nov. 4, years from now there won't be a need for election. I do not by any stretch of the imagination believe that a political party is the answer - whether a "D" or an "R" follows a candidate's name is of little importance. But those who do not care enough about their citizenship to register and vote will be the cause of the demise of the United States of America.
Who knows, if we could do it nationally we might even be able to do it in Albany, Mayville.
