Thumbs up to Chautauqua Lake Central School for offering a new sports camp this summer through U.S. Sports Institute. As with most summer camps, it is not free, but it is a good opportunity to get your kids up and out and active The camp runs for five days starting Monday, Aug. 6, and is geared for children from ages 3 to 14. Continuing on that theme, thumbs up to a solution being proposed for a parking problem at the wildly popular Ellery Park. Legislator Vince Horrigan of Bemus Point proposes having the county transfer the adjacent abandoned and tax-delinquent Vullo's Restaurant property to the town. In turn, the town will stand the cost of demolishing the building and use the lot to relieve the congestion around the multi-use, always-busy park on Route 430.
With a mile walking track, three tennis courts, two basketball courts, five soccer fields, two Little League baseball fields, a softball field, a football field and a really terrific playground for little kids - we can tell you for a fact that you will find folks from all over the area using the park, not just residents of Ellery.
It is a good move for all concerned and we hope county lawmakers support the proposal. Ellery Park is a wonderful asset for the area and the deals deserves serious consideration by the county.
Well, it's here again - the St. James Festival kicked off last night at St. James Church on Allen Street in Jamestown and continues through tomorrow.
The festival is all about music, dancing and food - and great deal of it superbly done Italian style. Homemade Italian baked goods are courtesy of the ladies of the church and entertainment will include the St. James Italian dancers. The festival runs 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and starts again at noon Sunday with music by Joe Iucalano after an 8 and 11 a.m. mass.
And of course Old Home Week is wrapping up in Frewsburg. The fundraiser for the Frewsburg Fire Department continues all day today and finishes off with a parade at 5 p.m. and then rides, food and music all evening.
