RANDOLPH - Florence Oakes, 81, formerly of East Randolph, Bay St. Louis, Miss., and the Randolph Manor, passed away Saturday, July 7, 2012, in the Heritage Village Rehab and Skilled Nursing Center in Gerry.
She was born July 4, 1931, in Niobe, N.Y., the daughter of the late George and Edna Flood Silvernail. Mrs. Oakes attended Randolph Central School and was a homemaker.
She and her late husband lived in Bay St. Louis for 37 years, returning to the area upon his death.
Florence was raised in the Free Methodist Church and was a member of the Randolph American Legion Auxiliary Unit 181. She enjoyed playing cards, crossword puzzles, baking and spending time with her grandchildren and her family.
She is survived by two daughters: Linda J. (David Brink) Edington of Frewsburg and Annette Spurlock of Bay St. Louis, Miss., a son, Allen (Cindy) Oakes of Ellington, 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and a sister, Beatrice Wellman of Lakewood, N.Y.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard E. Oakes, whom she married on July 24, 1948, and who preceded her on March 30, 1995, six siblings: Clarence, Walter, Paul, George, Mammie and Viola.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday (July 12, 2012) in the VanRensselaer & Son Funeral Home, 14 Church St., Randolph. Funeral services will follow at noon in the funeral home. The Rev. Sam Schreffler, chaplain of Heritage Village, will officiate. Burial will follow in the East Randolph Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made the Alzheimer's Association of WNY, 1915 Colvin Blvd., Tonawanda, NY 14150-6973.
