Thumbs up to persistence and to the Westfield Class of 1970 for maintaining a full measure of it all these years. The class tried 42 years ago to dedicate the Wayside building in honor of Dr. Van Laughlin for his five decades of service as the school physician. He declined at the time. Folks concluded that he did so out of modesty and perhaps embarrassment at being singled out. At their 40th reunion, members of the Class of 1970 decided to follow through on their original intention. And so today at 2 p.m., the building is to be dedicated to the late Dr. Van Laughlin. Friends and alumni are also invited to tour the entire Westfield Academy and Central School campus from 12:30 to 4 p.m.
Thumbs up to Morgan Johnson and Conrad Meyer, recipients of the Southwestern Middle School's Triple C award. The award comes from state Attorney General Eric. T. Schneiderman to recognize students who show character, courage and commitment.
Meyer and Johnson are exemplary representatives of all of the fine young people of their generation.
Thumbs up to the family that takes Hasbro into their home and their hearts. This 2-year-old spaniel/dachshund mix is a happy dog who loves to cuddle and who walks well on a leash. As the Chautauqua County Humane Society puts it, this little guy can be a tad talkative at times and so he would do best where someone is home most of the time.
Hasbro is waiting for his forever home at the Strunk Road Adoption Center.
In these parts, you can tell exactly where you are in the calendar by the events that are fast arriving. This week, of course, has been the overture for summer. The Fourth of July means parades, fireworks, picnics. And then we quickly swing into the weekly march through the grand events we look forward to all year. This weekend is typical and is typically busy: the Great Blue Heron Music Festival in Sherman, Art in the Park in Mayville, the Festival Craft Show at Chautauqua Institution, tractor pulls and community garage sales in South Dayton and the Chautauqua Lake Antique and Classic Boat Show at Bemus Point, to name a few.
Whew.
