CANTON, Ohio - The Southern Tier All-Star STARS opened the 2012 season, 5-2, winning the championship game in the Freedom Classic Tournament in Akron and Canton, Ohio last weekend.
The team is coached by B.J. Salerno and Andy Teconchuk, as they have faced teams from Canada, Michigan, Ohio and New York.
The STARS downed Clark County, Ohio in the championship game. The Stars broke a 1-1 tie when Bram Johnson (Jamestown) doubled in Cameron McIntosh (Warren, Pa.) who also doubled. Tyler Bradley (Warren, Pa) singled, stole a base and scored on a RBI single by Collin Fantaskey for a 3-1 lead.

In the seventh, Clark County scored once to cut the lead to 3-2 before Jason Stanton (Warren, Pa.) got a double play ball to end the game and earn the save.
Ben McGraw (Olean), Todd Fasenmyer (Warren, Pa), Austin Schwanke (Warren, Pa.) and Nick Anderson (Wellsville) also singled for the STARS. Anderson struck out two in two innings to get the win while Kyle Emerson (Jamestown), Tanner Teconchuk (Warren, Pa.) and Fantaskey (strikeout) combined to pitch four innings, giving up just two runs.
In the semifinals, a 9-6 win, Tyler Bradley picked up the win, giving up one hit and striking out two in relief of Emerson who struck out one. Brett Dehner (Jamestown) was 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs while Johnson was 2-for-3 with a two-run triple and scored twice. Trevor Cauvel (Erie, Pa) had a RBI triple and scored twice while Alex Guzman (Jamestown), Anderson (two RBIs, stolen base, run), McGraw (RBI, run) and Boe Brooks (Jamestown) singled.
The team will play in the New Era Showcase Tournament in Buffalo starting July 13.
